Call (844) 313-1397A safe gas hookup needs four things: a shutoff valve you can reach, a new listed flexible connector, a drip leg where one is required, and a leak check before the burners are first lit. Dallas 24 PLUMBER (Texas plumbing license # M-27587) hooks up gas ranges, cooktops, dryers and fireplace logs in Dallas, and runs the new branch when you switch from electric.
Longer runs of new pipe are covered under gas line installation; leaks in pipe you already have, under gas line repair.
Smell gas? Leave the building first and take everyone with you. Don't flip switches or light anything. From outside, call 911 or Atmos Energy, then call us at (844) 313-1397; for a gas smell we send our on-call plumber right away. See what to do if you smell gas.
What a correct hookup includes
- Shutoff valve. One per appliance, in the same room, within 6 feet and ahead of the connector. Behind a range or dryer is fine, since the appliance slides out.
- Flexible connector. A new listed connector for each appliance, 6 feet at most, never spliced to reach farther and never run through a wall or floor.
- Sediment trap (drip leg). Water heaters and furnaces need one. Ranges, clothes dryers, gas fireplaces and decorative logs in a vented fireplace are exempt, unless the maker's instructions ask for a trap.
Uncoated brass connector behind an old appliance? The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to replace it with stainless steel or coated brass, and not to pull the appliance out yourself to look, because moving it can break a weakened connector.
Ranges, cooktops, dryers and fireplaces
- Range. The valve and connector have to fit in the gap behind it so the range sits flush. Most gas ranges still plug into a standard outlet for the igniters. The anti-tip bracket is fastened and engaged, as the CPSC urges. Pro-style models burn more gas, so they get a pipe-size check.
- Cooktop. The valve goes in the cabinet below, reachable through the doors. Cooktops aren't named on the trap exemption list, so we plan room for a drip leg under the counter.
- Dryer. A 120-volt outlet, its own valve, and a 4-inch smooth metal duct that ends outdoors with a backdraft damper and no screen. Under the 2021 residential code Dallas uses, that duct can run 35 feet, less for each elbow, or the length the dryer maker's instructions set.
- Fireplace logs. Vented logs burn with the damper fixed open as the log maker directs, and their shutoff can be a marked key valve away from the firebox, as long as it's easy to reach and serves only the logs. For vent-free units, the City of Dallas gas test guidelines require an oxygen-depletion shutoff and bar unvented heaters as a home's primary heat.
Switching from electric to gas
- Gas at the house. With an Atmos meter already in place, the branch ties into existing pipe; an all-electric home needs Atmos service first.
- Load. We add the new appliance's BTU input to everything already connected and check the total against what the pipe carries over its length.
- Route. Slab homes and newer infill usually get the kitchen or laundry branch through the attic. Older pier-and-beam houses in Oak Cliff and East Dallas, like the bungalows of Winnetka Heights, platted in 1908, often allow a run under the floor.
- Power and vent. All-gas ranges and gas dryers run on a 120-volt outlet rather than the 240-volt circuit the electric models used, so an electrician may add one; a dual-fuel range with an electric oven still needs 240 volts. A dryer also needs the outdoor duct above.
- Permit and test, because a new branch changes the gas system.
Before you buy the appliance
- Pick a natural gas model. Atmos supplies natural gas, so a unit set up for propane needs the maker's conversion kit.
- Have the model number and BTU rating ready when you call so we can check your pipe.
- Look up where the gas inlet sits in the installation guide.
- Make sure an outlet is within reach of the cord.
- For a dryer, trace the vent route to an outside wall.
When Dallas requires a permit
Gas work in the city follows the Dallas Fuel and Gas Code, Chapter 60 of the city code, based on the 2021 International Fuel Gas Code. The city's gas test guidelines list the jobs that need a permit, a gas inspection and a city release, including new gas systems and any change, addition or alteration to an existing gas system. Swapping only the connector on the appliance side of the shutoff isn't on that list as a repair. Adding a branch or adding or moving a valve counts as a change to the gas system. Separately, the City of Dallas requires a plumbing permit to replace a water heater (see water heater installation).
The plumber doing the work pulls the permit in DallasNow, the city's permit system. Under the city guidelines, a City of Dallas plumbing inspector watches the piping hold 3 psi for at least 15 minutes, checks the gas appliances, then releases the gas to Atmos. More on gas pressure tests and the Dallas gas test.
Leak testing after the hookup
- Gas is turned on and air is bled out of the new line.
- Every joint from valve to inlet is checked with leak-detection solution or an electronic detector, never a flame.
- The appliance stays off until the piping shows no leaks, as the fuel gas code requires.
- Burners are lit, the flame is compared with the manual, and we show you where the shutoff is.
Gas appliance hookup questions
Does a gas range swap in Dallas need a city gas test?
+
It depends on the work. Extending pipe, adding or moving a valve or converting from electric needs a permit, a witnessed 3 psi test and a city release. For a swap at an existing valve, tell us the model and your current hookup when you call and we'll explain what your job needs.
Can the old connector be reused?
+
We don't reuse connectors. Each appliance gets a new listed one, which also retires old uncoated brass connectors that the CPSC says should be replaced.
Who turns the gas back on after a conversion?
+
Once the city inspector approves the test, the inspector gives Atmos Energy the release. If the meter was turned off, you then call Atmos to schedule the reconnect.
Why is there no drip leg behind my range?
+
Ranges are among the appliances the fuel gas code excuses from the sediment trap rule, so a range hookup without one is normal. The trap matters at a water heater or furnace.
