Running a whole-home standby generator on natural gas takes pipe wide enough to carry its full-load fuel from your meter, a meter that can supply that demand alongside your other appliances, and a City of Dallas permit and inspection before the line goes live. Dallas 24 PLUMBER installs the piping from meter to generator pad and coordinates with your electrician, working under Texas plumbing license # M-27587.

Smell gas near the meter or inside? Leave the building first and bring everyone with you. Don't touch light switches or light any flame. Once outside, call 911 or Atmos Energy, then call us at (844) 313-1397. For a gas smell we send our on-call plumber right away, at any hour.

Why Dallas homeowners are adding standby generators

Often the reason is February 2021. During Winter Storm Uri the National Weather Service logged -2°F at DFW Airport on February 16, part of a 139-hour stretch at or below freezing. Close to 4.5 million Texas homes and businesses lost power at the peak, and gas-heated houses got cold too, since a furnace needs power to ignite and run its blower. A standby unit notices the grid drop, starts on its own and draws fuel from your Atmos service.

How the pipe is sized

The spec sheet gives the generator's full-load gas draw, usually in cubic feet per hour; multiply by about 1,000 for BTUs per hour (federal energy figures put a cubic foot near 1,036 BTU). At full output, a whole-home model often uses more gas than the furnace, water heater and range together.

Then distance: the manual's tables show how far each pipe diameter can carry that load, and every elbow and tee eats into it. With the generator at full load and every other gas appliance burning, its inlet pressure must stay within the manual's range, given in inches of water column, or the engine can falter. Older Oak Cliff and East Dallas houses, including many late-1920s to 1940s homes in Kessler Park, often still run on their original steel pipe, laid out for a furnace, a water heater and a range and little else, so a dedicated run from the meter is usual.

Does your Atmos meter have enough capacity?

Atmos says the piping from its meter to your home is yours to maintain. The meter belongs to Atmos, and a generator can push your total load past what yours was chosen for. Check before buying:

  1. Total the load. We add each appliance's nameplate input to the generator's full-load figure.
  2. Call Atmos at the number on your gas bill with that total and the model. Ask whether the meter and regulator can supply it, whether they must change, and about any charge.
  3. Ask about delivery pressure. Atmos's meter request form for builders lists ounces (0.25 psi) or pounds (2 psi). Ask which your service can have, since that changes the pipe size we plan.

Meter work runs on Atmos's schedule. A locked or tagged meter stays untouched; see what to do about an Atmos red tag.

Placing the generator and routing the pipe

The maker's manual and city code set clearances. A common baseline from NFPA 37, the national fire standard for stationary engines, is five feet from windows, doors and wall vents; some models tested for reduced clearance can sit nearer the wall, and makers say not to set a generator under a wooden deck. Fumes can still get indoors, so we keep the pad away from bedrooms and pier-and-beam crawlspace vents.

  • Along the wall: exposed steel pipe when meter and pad share a side.
  • Across the yard: polyethylene gas pipe in a trench with a tracer wire. Dallas's Blackland Prairie clay expands after heavy rain and contracts in dry spells, so depth and bedding matter. Before the trench is dug, 811 gets the 48 hours' notice state law calls for, leaving weekends and legal holidays out of the count.
  • Final hookup: a manual shut-off, a drip leg and the flex connector the manual specifies.

City permit, inspection and your electrician

City of Dallas gas guidelines require a city inspection and release for new fuel gas systems and any addition to an existing one. The plumber doing the work pulls the permit through the city's DallasNow portal. Wiring needs a separate city electrical permit, pulled by a registered electrician, who wires the transfer switch. The electrician or dealer works out the generator's kilowatt size, which drives fuel draw, so we all plan from the same spec sheet.

  1. Agree on the unit and pad spot with you and the electrician or dealer.
  2. Gas rough-in from meter to pad, capped.
  3. Test and inspection: the new pipe is pressurized while a City of Dallas plumbing inspector reads the gauge and checks the work.
  4. Electrical inspection of the switch and wiring.
  5. Start-up: after the city release and any meter change, we purge the pipe, leak-test the joints, then load the generator and read its inlet pressure.

What you'll decide

  • Whole house or essentials. Central air in a July outage takes a larger unit and gas line than covering heat, the refrigerator and a few circuits.
  • The model itself. Two generators with the same kilowatt label can draw different amounts of gas.
  • Location: clearances, noise, drainage and service access.
  • Later additions. Planning a tankless water heater or outdoor kitchen? Tell us now so the pipe and the Atmos request cover it.

Cost comes down to pipe length, diameter, trenching and permit fees. New customers take $50 off, and seniors, military members and first responders get 10% off (coupon terms). Anywhere in Dallas, the pad spot and its distance back to the meter set most of the job, so we walk that route with you first.

Questions about generator gas lines

Do I need a city permit to run gas to a generator?

Yes. Under City of Dallas guidelines, new gas piping and additions to an existing gas system need a permit, inspection and city release. The transfer switch wiring is permitted separately as electrical work.

Can my generator tie into the gas pipe I already have?

Only if that pipe has room to spare once the generator's full-load input is added to everything else on it. Most whole-home units get a dedicated line from the meter.

Is my current gas meter big enough for a generator?

Possibly, depending on your meter and the new total load. Share the generator's maximum gas draw and your other appliance ratings with Atmos before you buy. Only Atmos changes the meter.

Who installs the transfer switch?

An electrician, under a separate city electrical permit. We handle the gas piping and line up the model, pad location and inspection timing with whoever does the electrical work.
